"I first heard of
hypnobirthing when my friend had one in another area of the country. I'd always
hoped to have a natural birth, and was planning a homebirth. As I had
previously suffered from panic attacks and fear hospitals I thought that
hypnobirthing would help me better prepare my mind and body for the calm,
natural homebirth that I desired - which it did.
We began our session
with Michelle at around the 30 week mark of my pregnancy. We had a 2 hour
session each week for 5 weeks at home in the comfort of our living room which
made sense as this is where we were hoping to have our baby.
As soon as Michelle
walked into the house both my partner and I felt at ease and we came to really
look forward to the sessions each week.
One of the most
important things was learning how the female body actually works and is
designed to give birth IF the brain works in unison with it. The hypnosis
sessions and fear release techniques were quite incredible. We were also given
a comprehensive 'manual' which my partner found very valuable and we practiced
lots between the sessions.
I think the key
really is preparation of mind and body. I did lots of meditations, listened to
the affirmations and the relaxation music I had chosen for birth on a daily
basis - and it paid off!
My baby was due on
the 10th March, Mothers day but I was hoping to have them before and sure
enough my labour began on the morning on the 7th March. As soon as my rushes
(contractions) began I listened to the affirmations and music I had prepared
and my partner set about preparing our birth pool in our dining room. As things
advanced my partner put into practise all the cues that we had learnt on the
course to help my stay focused and relaxed.
Later that day our
son Rufus was born at home, on the living room floor just as we had wished.
Apart from a few puffs of gas and air (which I later threw away as I found it
more of a hindrance than a help) I coped with labour with the help of my
amazing partner, the midwives and the hypnobirthing practices I had learnt.
Giving birth is an amazing and epic experience and it is so amazing what the
mind and body can do. I would do it all again in a heartbeat! Giving birth can
