Hypnosis to enhance fertility (Back to services)
Hypnotherapy allows you to restore balance to your mind and body, and can be a powerful tool to aid and enhance fertility.

When couples are faced with infertility they may experience a reduced sense of mental, emotional and physical well-being, leaving them feeling stressed, angry, frustrated, jealous, guilty, anxious or even depressed.

If couples are not supported this can affect their work, friendships, family and relationships. IVF can be particularly stressful, as couples can feel under enormous pressure for it to work due to the costs involved, only having a certain number of eggs available, or even 'time running out'.

Hypnosis treatments are particularly successful for those couples who have been diagnosed with unexplained infertility. This is because unexplained fertility is often linked to stress and anxiety.

Hypnotherapy to enhance Fertility allows you to work with your practitioner to reduce stress and anxiety, and increase your confidence so that you are able to maximise your chances of becoming pregnant either with or without medical assistance.

Help to turn a breech baby (through use of Moxibustion and/ or Hypnotherapy) (Back to services)
The term breech means that your baby is lying bottom first or feet first in the womb (uterus) instead of in the usual head down position. In early pregnancy, breech is very common. As pregnancy continues, a baby usually turns naturally into the head down position. Between 37 and 42 weeks (term), most babies are lying head first ready to be born. 3-4 in every 100 (3-4%) babies are breech at the end of pregnancy.

Why are some babies breech?
Sometimes it is just a matter of chance that a baby does not turn and remains in the breech position. At other times certain factors make it difficult for a baby to turn during pregnancy. These might include the amount of fluid in the womb (either too much or too little), the position of the placenta or if there is more than one baby in the womb.

How can we encourage baby to adopt a head down position?

Moxibustion
Moxibustion is a form of traditional Chinese medicine which utilises the body's energy channels or meridians to help turn your baby with the aid of moxi sticks. This is done by focusing on the bladder meridian which passes through the little toes and is thought to be linked to the uterus. Heat is applied to the bladder meridian with a moxi stick made from mugwort in order to create heat energy to turn your baby by slightly relaxing the uterus. This form of therapy should be completed by a competent therapist with knowledge of implications in pregnancy. We do not recommend that you try this yourself without consulting a practitioner first.

The optimum time for moxibustion is around 35 weeks so can be used prior to ECV providing that a breech presentation has been confirmed. If you have any medical indications which prevent an ECV then moxibustion should not be attempted. The treatments are usually carried out twice a day with a maximum of ten treatments. Once you have had your initial consultant with us, we will show you how to do this at home yourself, or we can come to your home to do this for you if you prefer.

Research into moxibustion have shown a success rate of 75% (Cardinale,1998), compared to ECV success rates of 40%.

Hypnotherapy for turning a breech baby
Hypnotherapy is a form of deep relaxation where the individual is more susceptible to suggestions. It is thought that the relaxation associated with hypnosis can help the uterus to relax enough for a breech baby to turn but also assists in the visualisation of the optimum position for birth. This is because unrecognized fears can create muscle tension, which may prevent the baby from turning properly. Hypnosis can address those fears and release them through general suggestions and loosen uterine muscles. In the course of a single hypnotherapy session Success rates can be as high as 81% as demonstrated in a research study (Mehl LE, 1994).

The optimum time for using hypnosis for turning a breech baby is 35 weeks onwards. Complementary birth can offer Hypnosis on its own or used in conjunction with moxibustion to assist in turning your baby from the breech position.

The advantages of hypnosis are that it is safe, non invasive, effective and enourages relaxation in the mother.

ECV (External Cephalic Version)
ECV is a procedure that attempts to manually turn the baby into a head down position through the abdominal wall. This must be conducted by an experienced obstetrician in hospital.

If you are 36 weeks pregnant and the baby is in a breech position, your obstetrician or midwife should discuss external cephalic version (ECV) with you- see RCOG Patient Information Turning a breech baby in the womb (external cephalic version). What are my choices for birth?

Success rates of ECV is dependent upon practitioner, but is reported to be around 40% successful.

Birth options
If your baby remains in the breech position, you will be counselled by an obstetrician or other health care professional about the options for birth.

There are benefits and risks associated with both caesarean delivery and vaginal breech birth and these should be discussed between you and your obstetrician and/or midwife, so that you can choose the best plan for you and your baby.

Learn massage techniques for labour and birth (Back to services)
Massage will stimulate your body to release endorphins. These are natural painkilling, mood lifting substances. Endorphins are responsible for the high that you feel after excercise or a good episode of laughter.

During labour, massage brings you closer to the person caring for you. This could be your partner, birth companion, or Midwife. Touch can make you feel better during contractions, as it is shown to reduce anxiety and pain. It can make contractions feel less intense and more managable. Massage has also been shown to be linked with shorter labours and a lower risk of postnatal depression.

Complementary Birth will teach you effective massage techniques including, upper back massage, lower back massage, and foot and hand massage. These techniques can be utilised during pregnancy, labour and birth, and beyond into the postnatal period.
