Complementary Birth invites you to participate in their 1st North West Regional Conference;

Maternity Care- Sharing Innovation in Practice.

At the Peace Centre, Warrington; June 9th 2016.

The aim of this conference is to increase the profile of Midwifery practices within our region, nationally and internationally. This conference provides a forum for all health professionals working with pregnant women and their families to share and celebrate their experiences and achievements.

The theme for the Conference focusses on the issues raised in the recent Maternity Review; and will focus on choice, continuity, and safe and effective care.

Drawing presenters from the novice to the expert, the conference offers participants a unique tasting plate of opportunity, rich in a culture of caring and compassion.

Aims - these sessions will enable midwives who have previously completed the three-day or intensive two-day course on Aromatherapy in Midwifery Practice and the Reflexology Techniques for Midwifery Practice course with Expectancy to review and reflect on their aromatherapy and reflex zone therapy practice to date, to update their knowledge and to network with other midwives.

Content - review of experience in midwifery aromatherapy and reflex zone therapy to date; discussion of issues which have arisen in practice; update on research; quiz on aromatherapy knowledge; review of reflex zone therapy techniques (if required); application to clinical practice

Aims - the study day aims to enable practitoners to

  • Explore the benefits and risks of complementary therapies and natural remedies during pregnancy and birth

  • Debate the professional, legal and ethical aspects of complementary therapies in relation to midwifery practice

Outcomes - by the end of the study day practitoners will be able to

  • Rationalise the benefits and risks of complementary therapies and natural remedies in pregnancy and birth in order to balance advocacy with safety

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the professional, legal, ethical and safety issues pertaining to complementary therapies in midwifery practice

Massage In pregnancy and Labour

Expectancy provides a one day course on the benefits of massage for pregnant and childbearing mothers. The course is RCM-accredited. Midwives and maternity supporters will be able to use specific massage techniques to ease pregnancy discomforts such as backache, suprapubic pain, oedema, carpal tunnel syndrome, insomnia etc.

We will also explore the value of massage during labour and how different techniques can be applied for the relief of pain and discomfort.

Aims:

  • Explore the benefits and possible risks of using massage in pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period

  • Develop skills in using massage for relief of pain and discomfort for specific conditions during pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period

Outcomes:

  • Identify those women who would benefit from having massage therapy during pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period

  • Utilise specific techniques for conditions during pregnancy, labour and the postnatal period
